YAMAZAKI 12 Year Old
YAMAZAKI 12 Year Old is the new launch of the Yamazaki Japanese distillery. The package has been updated and the Japanese whisky is tasty and balanced, as always!
The Yamazaki Distillery is located in Shimamoto, Osaka, in Japan. Owned by Suntory, it was opened in 1923 and was the country’s first commercial whisky distillery. There are three primary variants of this best Japanese whisky. The Yamazaki 12 year old whisky is one of them. The other two are the Yamazaki 18 year old and Yamazaki 25 year old.
Suntory is one of the oldest whisky companies in Japan. Started in 1899 by Torii Shinjiro, it is now Japan’s largest and most recognizable producer of quality whisky. In 1984, the Yamazaki 12 year old single malt was introduced to the market. It was the very first single malt whisky to be seriously marketed in Japan.
This bottle of Japanese malt whisky is rather rare due to Japan’s whisky crisis. Basically, supply is not meeting the demand of consumers. In the 1980s, production was lowered as there was a drop in demand for whisky so we are reaping the results of it now. There is indeed a lack of stock for aged whisky.
The pioneer of single malt Japanese whiskeys, Yamakazi is renowned for its soft waters. Suntory’s master blenders have devoted themselves to balancing and blending the harmony of Japanese nature and craftsmanship. With a reverence for Japanese omotenashi, the Yamazaki whisky is among the most awarded and admired in the entire world, making it a Japanese whisky winner in multiple international competitions.
Awards for the 12 year old top Japanese whisky include:
- 2010: Gold Award, International Spirits Challenge
- 2013: Double Gold Medal Award, San Francisco World Spirits Competition
- 2017: Gold Award, World Whiskies Awards
- 2018: Gold Award, International Spirits Challenge
At Yamazaki, there is a unique misty climate of varying temperature and humidity. Here, the master blenders pursue their founder’s legacy through the art of Tsukuriwake, or the diversity in the making. Through the diverse fermentation process, distillation and maturation techniques, the signature Yamazaki 12 year old single malt Japanese whisky was birthed.
Yamazaki 12 year old whisky is pure gold in colour, making it easy on the eyes.
On the nose, fruity notes of peach, pineapple, grapefruit, clove and candied orange with a hint of vanilla waft through the whisky glass. There is also a hint of Mizunara or Japanese oak, of which the whisky has sat in for 12 years.
The taste is deep and multi-layered. Coconut, cranberry and butter tastes are prominent on the palate.
It’s finish is rather long with sweet ginger and cinnamon notes added to it.
